What is a School Social Worker?

School Social Workers are the link between home, school, and community. They provide unique services to students and their families to help students attain maximum benefits from their school programs. Students and their families have a wide variety of needs. School Social Workers are trained to deal with these needs. They are licensed by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners.  Social Workers have knowledge of a wide range of social, emotional, cultural, and economic differences among children, families, and communities.

 

 Description of Services 

School Social Workers promote and support student academic and social success by providing specialized services that include: 

  • Individual and group counseling 
  • Support groups for students and parents 
  • Crisis prevention and intervention 
  • Home visits 
  • Attendance related issues 
  • Parent education and training 
  • Case management 
  • Information and referral 
  • Collaboration with other pupil services professionals 
  • Collaboration with community agencies and organizations 
  • Advocacy for students, parents, and the school system 
  • Coordination of programs such as School Parent Program and 
  • Grandparent Support Groups 

 

Contacting a School Social Worker 

Referrals can be made in different ways. They can come from the following: 

  • Administrators 
  • Teachers, Counselors 
  • Nurses, Parents 
  • Students , or Community Members.
