McCollum girls win tournament

‘Running and gunning’ is a popular basketball phrase and it is exactly what the McCollum High School Girls Varsity Team was doing November 29-December 1. The girls took first place at the Edgewood Basketball Tournament, after beating St. Anthony’s, Kennedy and the Young Women’s Leadership Academy in pool play and then Memorial in the championship game. Miranda Moreno was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament while Denise Vasquez and Kim Casias were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“With this win… I am hoping the girls will take it and run with it. We have a good team this year and it is time the girls started to believe in themselves like all our fans have from the beginning,” said Head Coach Jessica Dedman.

The McCollum High team is made up of 11 players, six seniors, three juniors and two sophomores. They are now gearing up for district play which begins December 14 against Southside at 6:30 p.m.
