Incredible. Gabriella Vasquez spelled that word correctly in round 16 to win the annual spelling bee competition at Schulze Elementary School on January 10. The competition pitted students from 3rd to 5th grade against each other for the chance to advance to the San Antonio Express-News’ 60th Annual Regional Spelling Bee.
Students who wanted to try-out for the school’s spelling bee were given a written test beforehand and the top finishers moved on to the next round which included spelling in front of a crowd while on stage in the cafeteria. For participating, each student received a dictionary and a set of dog tags. The year’s top winners were:
1st place: Gabriella Vasquez, 5th grade
2nd place: Amairani Ruiz, 4th grade
3rd place: Jaden Leal, 5th grade
The regional spelling bee will take place March 9 at Trinity University’s Laurie Auditorium.
