Families gathered just inside the front doors of Schulze Elementary on February 7, waiting to hear all about the school’s first Family Reading Night of the year. By the decorations on the walls, there was a lot of explaining to do. Each hallway was decorated with a different theme.
Principal Sylvia Tovar told parents that the school was trying to get kids excited about reading and that Family Reading Night was an opportunity for parents to get involved too. There were six reading stations down every hallway and each one focused on a different reading theme. Teachers really helped set the tone by their dress, some as sailors, others as pirates, or whatever adventure that particular book took them on.
With such a large turnout, Ms. Tovar expressed her hope for future reading nights. “What we would like to do is eventually have a fall and spring event. We have an outstanding community here. They really enjoy bringing their children and seeing the teachers working together with kids in a different environment.”
