Gabriela Ortega from Adams Elementary School along with 18 other teachers from across Bexar County were honored Wednesday with a Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching award. The educators gathered inside the Stieren Theater May 1 and then were presented with a crystal Tiffany’s apple and check for $1,500. Two teachers, Charlotte Dolat of Alamo Heights and Isabel Anaya of Northside ISD, also received the top award, the Trinity Prize itself.

Trinity University’s Department of Education instituted the recognition program during the 1981-1982 school year. Thanks to a partnership with H-E-B and the San Antonio Express-News, they have been able to continue honoring outstanding public school teachers every year since.

Harlandale ISD’s nominee, Mrs. Ortega, is also the distict’s Teacher of the Year and was named KENS 5’s ExCEL Award winner. For that honor Mrs. Ortega received a golden apple award, a $1,200, check, was featured on the 5pm news and her picture was put up at a branch of the San Antonio Credit Union. SACU partners with KENS 5 for this recognition program and honors all districts’ teachers at a banquet which was held April 30 at the Sonterra Country Club.
