The first school-based health clinic in Bexar County is now open and already busy. University Health System partnered with the Harlandale Independent School District to open the clinic inside the round building at Collier Elementary, 834 W. Southcross. About 50 UHS and HISD officials as well as community members were on hand August 15 for the official ribbon cutting ceremony. By the time it occurred at 10:00 a.m., the clinic itself had seen about 10 patients and several more were in the waiting room.

“When children are sick, they can’t go to school so they miss out on education. This clinic is designed especially to meet the health needs of our students and our school district will reap the benefits of fewer absences thus increasing state funding which is based on average daily student attendance.”

The UHS School-based Health Clinic currently has two exam rooms but will have have two more by January. It is staffed by a nurse practicioner and a medical assistant and will be open Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Any HISD student and his/her siblings up to age 18 can take advantage of the services offered which will include immunizations, physical exams, Well Child checkups, sports physicals and minor acute care. To schedule an appointment, call 358-TALK (8255).
