A home-grown leader has been appointed as Interim Superintendent of the Harlandale Independent School District. In a 5-0 vote, Rey Madrigal was selected to take over the reign from beloved, outgoing Superintendent Robert Jaklich. The changeover happened almost simultaneously.
On June 21, Jaklich was officially named as Superintendent of Victoria ISD, weeks after being announced as the lone finalist. Meantime the HISD Board of Trustees chose Madrigal as the district’s next leader.
Madrigal is a product of Harlandale, being born and raised here. He graduated from Harlandale High School and has since spent 30 years serving the district. Most recently, Madrigal was the Assistant Superintendent for Maintenance and Operations. Before that, he was the principal at his alma mater, transforming it from an academically unacceptable school to a recognized one. Madrigal was also principal at Harlandale Middle School and Vice Principal and Head Coach at McCollum High School. He will serve in the interim superintendent capacity for a minimum of six months then undergo a review.
