This year’s eighth graders are going to get extra attention as they GEAR UP for college, but the district needs your help to make that happen.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is designed to prepare more students for an educational life beyond high school by providing mentors, college readiness classes and field trips to colleges and universities. GEAR UP is looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways, as a mentor, guest speaker and/or hosting a field trip at your job site. If you are interested in helping, please fill out this form and return it to the GEAR UP office.
Last October, the U.S. Department of Education awarded a $27.1 million grant to the Harlandale and San Antonio school districts for GEAR UP. SAISD will get $21.5 million and Harlandale will receive the other $5.6 million. The money will be distributed over seven years, the same amount of time it takes last year’s seventh graders to complete their freshman year in college.
