First graders at Gilbert Elementary were just returning from their morning P.E. class when they noticed a surprise waiting for them in the cafeteria. Nicha’s Comida Mexicana Restaurant delivered 83 new backpacks packed to the seams with school supplies. Owner Richard Garcia along with five of his employees delivered the supplies on Thursday, August 30 in an effort to help support the community’s children. Nicha’s purchased the backpacks while customers of the south side restaurant provided all the supplies that were stuffed inside.
As the children entered the cafeteria, each one excitedly chattered about which backpack they hoped to get. “I call dibs on the Batman one,” exclaimed one child. After choosing a backpack each child said “thank you” as the walked back to their seats.
