The tables were set, jazz music was playing, and guests were greeting each other warmly. It was the beginning of the 2012 Harlandale ISD Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. More than 200 people showed up at Harlandale High School on November 8 to honor the 10 newest inductees, seven alumni and three community service members. They are:
· Robert Martinez, Harlandale HS
· Janet West Miller, Harlandale HS
· Adolfo Moncivaiz, Harlandale HS
· Jaime Barrera, McCollum HS
· Norbert Buys, Jr., McCollum HS
· Dennis Elmore, McCollum HS
· Patricia Leal, McCollum HS
· Darrell Griffin (†), Community Service
· Diana Rangel, Community Service
· Pat Tobar, Community Service
Honorees as well as their family, friends and coworkers started arriving early and had time to enjoy the company while snacking on appetizers served by Chef John Stewart and his students in the Culinary Arts program. The celebration really got underway after Don Pedro’s Mexican Restaurant catered the dinner. It was time for the nomination videos which made a few people tear up. Each inductee then took the stage to say a few words.
Most inductees thanked their spouses and kids; some were grateful for the teachers and principals they had in school; and they all shared some personal stories. Mrs. Miller talked about being the first female high school band director in Texas; Mr. Elmore bragged about scoring all the touchdowns during the 1967 Frontier Bowl; and Ms. Rangel shared her plight after adopting two children.
It was a wonderful celebration and the Harlandale ISD is proud to welcome these new members into the Hall of Fame family. Hall
