Schools throughout the Harlandale ISD are taking time to honor veterans. Veterans Day is officially November 11 but in the days leading up to and even after it, students were learning about the sacrifices made by service members.
The Scheh Center held a special recognition ceremony November 9 in front of the school and teenagers themselves emceed. They detailed the history of Veterans Day and explained why Americans pay tribute every year.
At Columbia Heights Elementary School, students were treated to a day of learning by the 717th Military Intelligence Battalion. Before becoming a science teacher at Columbia Heights in 2009, Mrs. Nadja Root was a member of the U.S. Army and takes it upon herself to invite the unit to her school every year. The battalion is comprised of the soldiers from all military branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. They help kids participate in activities like a Military Dog Demo, Fitness Challenge, and First Aid.
