Spicy salsa topped with a cool guacamole was the winning combination at the annual Salsa Contest at McCollum High School on December 10. The students who created it were senior Chelsea Gimble and junior Michael Berjaran. They were one of 22 teams made up of students from Harlandale ISD’s Culinary Arts Program who mixed up their favorite concoctions and then let judges, friends and family taste test.
“Hmm, it’s not as hot as I thought it would be.” “Oh my, that’s sweet.” “Ugh oh, here comes the heat.” Those were just a few comments made as teens and adults dunked their chips in all the different dips.
Chef John Stewart, who oversees the program, says this was the first challenge of the year where his students had free range to create any sort salsa. Many of them used traditional ingredients like jalapeños, cilantro, onions and lime. A few teams, however, got a little creative and added in bacon, mango, and strawberries.
