While most people are out spending money this holiday season, some students from Leal Middle School are learning to manage their money. A group of 91 eighth graders visited the Junior Achievement Finance Park December 11. Business professionals from the banking industry were on hand to teach the kids how to maintain a budget. The students were given different financial scenarios, some were single and others were married with children, but all of them had to make fiscal decisions on items like mortgages, utilities, transportation, education and entertainment. Some of the students said the hands-on activity made them realized just what their parents have to go through.
The students are part of Mr. Raynaldo Garza’s Career Exploration class. Similar classes from all Harlandale ISD middle schools visit the Finance Park. It is run by Junior Achievement which is the largest organization dedicated to educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
