LULAC honors four individuals, three from Harlandale

Tucked away in a ballroom at the Embassy Suites Riverwalk on December 21 were some of the biggest supporters of education. About 200 people gathered for the annual LULAC National Education Service Centers’ Education Awards Gala. They were there to help honor four community members for their outstanding service, including three with ties to the Harlandale ISD.

Rey Madrigal has spent nearly 27 years as an educator with Harlandale, his alma mater. He started as a Special Education Teacher and Assistant Coach, then went on to become the Head Football Coach at McCollum High School, Vice Principal then Principal at Harlandale middle and high as well as the Assistant Superintendent for Operations before being named Interim Superintendent. He has served in that capacity since July 2012, reminding faculty, staff, students and community members that every single person makes a difference.

·         Dr. Sylvester Perez, Interim Superintendent at San Antonio ISD, Harlandale ISD graduate and Harlandale ISD Hall of Fame member

·         Jim Adams, University Health System Board Member, Harlandale ISD graduate, Harlandale ISD Hall of Fame member and President of the Harlandale Education Foundation

·         Sylvia De Leon, San Antonio College
