Custodian goes up and over

“Above and beyond” is one way to describe when someone does something beyond their call of duty. A custodian at Rayburn Elementary put her own twist on that saying by going “up and over” her work responsibilities.

Eliza Gonzales was cleaning up after lunch on January 15 when a little girl approached her in tears, saying she had lost the new wallet she got for Christmas. The kindergartner remembered having the wallet on her lunch tray and thought she may have accidently thrown it away with her leftovers. Unfortunately, the trash itself had already been taken out of the trashcans and placed in the big dumpsters outside. Ms. Gonzales did what many people would not have. She climbed over and into a dumpster, searching through trash bag after trash bag until she found it.

“I went through a bunch of bags before I found it. She got excited because I gave it back to her. She said thank you,” said Ms. Gonzales.

For her effort, Principal Dr. Cody Miller presented Ms. Gonzales with the “Panther of the Week” award.

“This week, obviously with Eliza being willing to go so far above and beyond the call of duty and being willing to go get her hands dirty to save the day for one of our students, She was certainly deserving of the award this week” said Dr. Miller.
