It was a unanimous decision. Harlandale Education Foundation Board members met with district and high school administrators January 24 and voted to increase scholarship amounts for this year. Students who graduate in 2013 and do not receive the Pell Grant are now eligible for $1,250. Those who do receive the Pell Grant will get $625. Scholarships amounts had been $1,000 and $500.
Harlandale ISD employees and business across San Antonio are to thank for the 25% increases. Every year since HEF was initiated in 1999, employees have donated thousands of dollars, including more than $55,000 last year alone. Those funds are then matched by a private donor. The business community has also made huge contributions, more than $240,000, through the HEF galas and golf tournaments held the last couple of years.
Every HISD graduate who goes on to a college, university or technical/trade school is eligible for a scholarship.
