The sun wasn’t quite out yet but nearly 100 district officials, students and parents were already wide awake enjoying breakfast together for a special cause. They gathered for the annual Harlandale Education Foundation’s (HEF) Employee Fund Drive Kickoff Breakfast at Don Pedro’s Mexican Restaurant on February 6.
HEF is a foundation like no other, offering scholarships to every single Harlandale ISD graduate who pursues a higher education. For two weeks every year, employees have the chance to donate via cash, check or payroll deduction. The breakfast served as a motivation tool to the principals, counselors and teachers who are responsible for the drive at their campus or department.
Attendees were treated to a delicious buffet breakfast then got to hear from the students who will be or have been impacted by HEF. Seniors Daniella Aguirre from Harlandale High School and Alyx Bermea from McCollum High School spoke about needing help to pay for college. Then live via Skype, University of Texas students and HISD alumni Selena Madrigal, Bianca Rosales, Stephanie Garza, and Nadine Ginithan, shared their college experience and thanked everyone for making HEF so successful.
The Harlandale Education Foundation was initiated in 1999 and has since awarded nearly 2,000 graduates with scholarships. Thanks to employee contributions and a dollar-for-dollar match by a private donor, this year’s scholarship amounts will be increased by 25%, from $500 to $650 for Pell Grant recipients and $1,000 to $1,250 for non-Pell Grant recipients.
