Friday morning some members of the Harlandale High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team were gathered in the main hall teasing one of their own. While the joking was playful, the team couldn’t be prouder of Victor Martinez. The senior forward was named ESPN San Antonio’s “Player of the Week” for the week of March 18. Radio host and former Dallas Cowboys player Dat Nguyen was on hand to award Victor with a certificate.
“It’s a program where we recognize student athletes in the classroom and on the field. We try to recognize them, not just for the players, but for the school, the program, and the coaches,” says Nguyen. “We recognize the kid, and it gives them a lot of confidence.”
According to the San Antonio Express-News, the award comes after Victor scored six of 14 goals and had one assist when the Indians defeated Pleasanton and McCollum to win the District 57-4A title.
