The Terrell Wells Middle Schools Boys Basketball B-Team is basking in the glory of an undefeated season. The Trojans placed 1st with an overall record of 11-0. Coach Chris Flores recapped the season this way:
While the majority of the student body was at home enjoying the Christmas break a select few young men were gearing up for the start of a new season. The Terrell Wells Eighth Grade Basketball team knew they had no time to waste with their first opponent waiting for them on the other end of the break; so they got right to work and developed a mindset that would prove beneficial as the season wore on.
The focus of the Trojans was to work hard every day striving to get better than they were the day before and end the season as District Champions. The motivation would not be hard to find, after the Trojans reached the championship game only to lose to J. L. Matthey in 2012. This was all the fuel they would need to power through the 2013 season.
The Trojans coasted through the regular season to finish with a perfect eight and O record and secured the overall Number 1 seed for the conference tournament.
The first opponent up for Terrell Wells was the Scobee Tigers, which they handled fairly easy with a 34-19 victory. Needing only two more victories to reach their season goal, the rematch the Trojans had been waiting for, for one year was upon them.
In round two, 9-0 Terrell Wells would square off against the defending Conference Champions Matthey Cardinals (8-1). Terrell Wells was able to channel their energy and use it to jump out to an early lead and never relinquish it to hold on for a seven point victory.
Up until this point the Trojans had done everything they had set out to do and were waiting for their opponent in the championship game. When all the dust would settle it would be a showdown between the two unbeatens for outright supremacy.
The 10-0 Jaguars of Zamora representing South San ISD would take on the 10-0 Trojans of Terrell Wells representing Harlandale ISD. The Trojans would again get off to a fast start and open up a 14 point lead in the first half. But Zamora would not go away that easily. After making some halftime adjustments the Jaguars put pressure on the ball and were able to stifle the Trojan offense enough to creep back in the game. Zamora would eventually take a two point lead with 1:15 to go in regulation and test the will of the Trojans.
Terrell Wells would answer the call and respond like a champion. Terrell Wells used a mixture of a full and half court press to create some turnovers and made some clutch free throws to regain the lead and hold on for a 36-34 victory.
“This was the perfect way to end a great season. These boys gave me everything they had all year...I couldn’t be prouder of these young men” Says Coach Flores.
Congratulations to the Terrell Wells eighth grade B Basketball team for representing themselves, their coaches, their school and their community well. Job well done!
