Fond memories and stories were shared as family, friends, colleagues and former students paid their respects to a teacher who touched many lives. Terrell Wells Middle School alumni held a special memorial ceremony May 5 for William “Bill” Sanchez.
About 50 people showed up to reminisce about the longtime choir director. They talked about Mr. Sanchez’s love of music and movies, his humor and his gift of bringing out the best in people. Several of his former students mentioned how he was more than a teacher. He was a role model, a good example and like a father to many students.
To help honor his legacy, there is now a plaque hanging near the stage where so many of Mr. Sanchez’s groups performed. It is the same stage where some of his students sang a final song to him Sunday night, “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Visitors at the memorial ceremony also helped plant a tree in the exact spot where his piano sat for so many years. Back then, his classroom was housed in a portable building. Now, that area is open.
William “Bill” Sanchez passed away at age 69. He worked at Harlandale ISD for 30 years.
