Luz Sanchez, 4th grader at Gilbert Elementary, was recognized at school Thursday for winning 1st place in the Karate Kids of America “Just Say No” letter writing contest. Superintendent Rey Madrigal, School Principal Ms. Herlinda Martinez-Longoria and fellow students held a small ceremony in the gym to congratulate and praise her.

Out of more than 5,000 entries, Luz’s letter was selected as the best in the 4th grade category. For her win, Karate Kids of America awarded her with an X-box 360 Kinect System and will have the chance to meet with Governor Rick Perry, Mayor Julian Castro, and Judge Nelson Wolff over the next two months.
