With just seven days left in the 2012-2013 school year, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee met one last time on May 28. Students from all HISD secondary schools gathered at Central Office and were treated to a special guest speaker. Steven Puente, a 2011 McCollum HS graduate, Skyped in from Australia where he is taking part in the University of the Incarnate Word’s Study Abroad Program. Steven reflected on his high school career, touted college life, and explained his journey down under. He also shared some advice, telling the students, “The only person who can hold you back from achieving your dreams is yourself.”

Superintendent Rey Madrigal reiterated Steven’s message, sharing his story of growing up in the district, being the first of five boys to graduate from high school and college, then working his way through HISD to become the Superintendent. Mr. Madrigal ended the meeting by presenting each student with a Certificate of Participation.

Students from grades 6th-12th met with the Superintendent once a month over lunch to discuss issues and concerns.
