Some Harlandale ISD students spent the first half of their summer thinking about college and careers thanks to a special partnership between the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) and Boy With a Ball.
“Everyone has their story as to how they got to where they are now. Hear their story,” explained a GEAR UP staff member to all the pre-teen participants at Kingsborough Middle School.
The summer program provided students with access to fun, educational outdoor activities as well as guest speakers from places like Toyota, Animal Care Services and St. Phillips College.
“Life is full of challenges and it is not what you don’t have, but what you make of what you do have,” said Ruben Priesto, STEM Coordinator at St. Phillips College.
GEAR UP is a college readiness program that follows students beginning in their eighth grade year through their first year in college. Boy with a Ball is a non-profit organization that encourages youth to make a change in their community. Their summer program ran June 10-July 3.
