There is a saying that reads: “It takes a village to raise a child." One day a year, September 8th this year, senior members of that village are recognized with Grandparents’ Day.
At Harlandale ISD, some elementary schools celebrated grandparents a little early, September 4th-6th. They invited grandparents into their schools to explore and spend time with their grandchild by having lunch, sitting in class and posing for pictures with them around campus.
National Grandparents Day was created by a federal proclamation, passed by Congress, signed by President Jimmy Carter and first celebrated on Sunday September 9, 1979. Originally though, in 1970, a West Virginia homemaker and mother of 15 envisioned it in as a special day to honor grandparents. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore in 1973.
