Students across the district are celebrating National GEAR UP week September 23-27. As a way to recognize the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) initiative, students, teachers and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite college/university shirt on Wednesday, September 25. During morning announcements at Harlandale and McCollum high schools, students will also share ways of how furthering their education can benefit their lives.
GEAR UP is a federal initiative that focuses on increasing the number of underrepresented groups in higher education. HISD’s GEAR UP began two years ago with a focus on the Class of 2017. Back then those students were seventh graders. Now they are freshman. GEAR UP will continue to track those students through their freshman year in college.
HISD and the San Antonio ISD partnered in 2011 to apply for the GEAR UP grant and were awarded $27.1 million. Harlandale will receive $5.6 million.
