Mini-grant winners surprised with check

Cheers were heard and even a few tears were shed as some teachers and staff members were surprised with big checks for their “bright ideas.” Superintendent Rey Madrigal and a team of administrators and judges spent October 14 & 15 delivering the good news to all Bright Idea Mini-Grant winners. More than $10,000 was handed out. The winners are:

·         Melissa Casey, Director for Secondary Education, for Project RISE (Recognize & Ignite Student Excellence). Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Rodney La Point, HISD Head Nurse, for the Harlandale Community Health Fair. Amount awarded: $500

·         Della Taylor, Director of Special Education, for the What’s Next Symposium. Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Kristin Epstein, Columbia Heights Elementary School, for Open the Door and Let’s Explore. Amount awarded: $835

·         Collette Knight, Gilbert Elementary, for Project Mustang: Reading Achievement through Listening. Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Jennifer Montes, Gilbert Elementary, for Gilbert is College Bound. Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Kimberly Jones, Harlandale Middle School, for Reaching Out Project. Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Ann Thomas, Harlandale High School, for Scientific Research and Design/Rocketry Program. Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Michael Bustos, Harlandale High School, for Filling in the Gaps. Amount awarded: $1,000

·         Melanie Leija, Frank Tejeda Academy, for Fascinatingly Talented Actors Bringing Real Opportunities Near Classrooms of Students. Amount awarded: $989

·         Stephanie Campos, Kingsborough Middle School, for We Need A Voice Too: Improving the Teaching Methods in English as a Second Language Learner’s Classroom. Amount awarded: $218

·         Veronica Sanchez, Bellaire Elementary, for Comunidad de Lectores (Community of Readers). Amount awarded: $480
