Counselors at McCollum High School are walking a little taller after being selected as the winners of the 2013 CREST Award for Counseling Excellence. The team is made of Priscilla Chavez, Therese Jimenez, James Kappmeyer, Diana Rangel, Suzanne Salinas and Michelle Tallon. The same day they learned of the honor, December 16, the HISD Board of Trustees recognized them at their meeting.
CREST stands for Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas. This year, 41 schools in the state were awarded, including McCollum. All the winners were chosen for demonstrating a commitment to the school guidance and counseling program and for improving the lives and achievements of students in academic, career, and personal social domains.
The Texas School Counselor Association began the awards program in 2005 as a way to recognize schools with outstanding counseling programs. Harlandale High School won the award in 2011.
