Teacher nominated as Life Changer of the Year

Dual Language Teacher Mary Guerrero has been nominated for a Life Changer of the Year Award presented by the National Life Group, a financial services company. Ms. Guerrero has almost four decades in education under her belt and every one of those years has been at Gilbert Elementary.

One of Ms. Guerrero’s current first graders, Mariana Torres, described her teacher as “nice, funny, and creative”. She proudly discussed the “100 charts” lining the hallway, saying she likes the projects and activities Ms. Guerrero assigns her.

Even after 38 years, Ms. Guerrero says teaching is “everything” to her. She enjoys watching students progress and change for the better. Ms. Guerrero believes the greatest lesson to be learned is that “education can never be taken away,” She wants students to “want to learn and keep learning,” with a strong desire to continue reading.

Principal Herlinda Martinez-Longoria believes Ms. Guerra’s passion for teaching and children sets her apart. “Ms. Guerrero wants to give her students the best as if they are her kids. She leaves a lasting impression on students, and they leave a lasting impression on her.”

Ms. Guerrero will learn if she won the Life Changer of the Year award in the spring. The Grand Prize Winner will get $5,000 and a $5,000 donation to the school.

Ms. Guerrero is also a nominee for an H-E-B Excellence in Education Teaching Award.
