For the first time in more than 50 years, students will soon get to walk and play inside new, state-of-the art, multi-million dollar band halls and field houses at Harlandale and McCollum high schools. The structures are still under construction but are expected to be completed by August 20, just in time for the new academic school year. With an estimated 26,000 square feet combined for the buildings per campus, they will be impressive additions to both campuses. A home-grown leader has been appointed as Interim Superintendent of the Harlandale Independent School District. In a 5-0 vote, Rey Madrigal was selected to take over the reign from beloved, outgoing Superintendent Robert Jaklich. The changeover happened almost simultaneously. On June 21, Jaklich was officially named as Superintendent of Victoria ISD, weeks after being announced as the lone finalist. Summer Robotics Program

During the summer while some kids are out playing with friends, hanging out at home, or spending time with family, others are expanding their creative thinking and problem solving skills through the Robotics Program at Harlandale ISD. Although the program is running for two separate weeks this summer at Harlandale High School, it is elementary and middle school students who are benefiting. The program requires their young minds to use Lego Mindstorm Robots to try and accomplish certain tasks on a track, but first, they must program the robot to make specific movements and actions. The kids are able to work in groups to get their robot moving.

Some students are getting creative with what to do with the second half of their summer break. Beginning Monday, July 16, nearly 100 elementary-aged kids started taking advantage of Harlandale's Summer Arts Program. With the fall sports season quickly approaching, students from across San Antonio are spending their morning at the Harlandale Memorial Stadium to take advantage of the Vacation Plyo School hosted by Adam Reyes and Day One Physical Therapy and Wellness. A Harlandale High School basketball player is being praised for scoring more than 1,000 points during her basketball career, and she is only a junior. Connie Garza averaged 14 points, 9 rebound and 2 blocks this season. Young artists from across Harlandale ISD put on a grand display during the district's Spring Art Show at Schulze Elementary on May 8th. You could tell just by looking at the crowd. The comeback of the Math Fiesta at Harlandale High School was the campus' most successful event of the school year. More than 1,000 people showed up May 18 and that was before it even kicked off at noon. In dresses that sparkled and ties that shined, nearly 300 McCollum High School juniors and seniors posed for pictures and danced the night away at this year's Junior/Senior Prom on May 18 at the Emporium. Some of the teenagers showed up in limousines, others drove up in vintage cars. Some had dates, others arrived with a group. Some had gone out to a nice dinner beforehand, others enjoyed the meal served on site. Whatever the case, students got one last chance to dress up and hang out one last time before the school year ends. Harlandale High School holds its prom May 25 at the Incarnate Word Sky Room.
