STEM Early College HS freshman Sydney Aguilar has a warm spot for those in need. She hopes to make a big difference as a pediatrician one day, but for now, she’s making a difference as a STEM ECHS Rattler.
Sydney recently founded the school’s first coat drive and was able to collect 46 coats for Haven for Hope.
“I was driving by Haven for Hope one day and noticed there were a lot of kids and adults seeking shelter and I knew that the weather was going to be cold so I wanted to donate coats,” Sydney explained.
She summoned the help of her peers for a month by encouraging them to donate through the morning announcements, flyers and word of mouth. Before she knew it, she had 46 coats in all different colors and sizes.
“I didn’t expect to get so many coats,” Sydney said. “I thought there was only going to be a handful, but everybody wanted to participate.”
She hopes the coats will be keeping those in need warm and is already planning for another coat drive next winter.
Way to go, Sydney and STEM Rattlers!
