McCollum Band to perform at Battle of Flowers Band Festival halftime show

The McCollum Band will perform during the 80th Battle of Flowers Band Festival’s halftime show at Alamo Stadium on April 26, 2018.

More than 30 high school bands in San Antonio and surrounding areas participate in the annual Fiesta event; however, only three feature bands are chosen to perform during the halftime show.

“The band is really excited to be a feature band,” McCollum High School Band Director Gilbert Borrego said. “It's been over 20 years since the McCollum Band was a feature band!”

The band is already busy working on their performance and can’t wait for the city to see it.

“The judges will see our UIL Division Marching Show called ‘Fused,’ and we may add something extra to enhance the overall effect of the performance …so stay tuned,” Borrego said.

In order to be considered a feature band, a video recording or a YouTube link of the band’s performance has to be submitted. The Battle of the Bands Festival Committee then determines who is awarded the title of a feature band.

“Since the McCollum Band was officially the highest ranking 5A school in all of San Antonio in terms of advancing at the UIL Area D Marching Contest, I believe our accolades and very successful marching season helped us get this prestigious honor,” Borrego said.

As one of Fiesta’s most popular events, all the bands join forces as they parade around the track performing their songs with colorful flags and twirlers.  At the end of the evening, all musicians perform three musical productions together on the field in a spectacular crowd-pleasing finale set to fireworks!

“It’s truly amazing. This is such a great honor to be performing our show as we celebrate our city’s 300th birthday,” Borrego said. “What a great year to have this honor…Viva Fiesta 2018!”

Congratulations, McCollum Cowboy Band!
