Harlandale HS hosted its third annual SNIPSA “The Big Fix” event on Jan. 20.

A total of 459 animals attended the event, making it SNIPSA’s biggest city record for the most spay/neuter surgeries performed in one day!

Pet owners across the community packed HHS’s parking lot, waiting to hand over their furry pets so they could get fixed, vaccinated and micro-chipped.

Harlandale HS PAWS Club was also present during the event to lend a hand. HHS Counselor Chris Lewis, who helped start the school’s PAWS Club, was happy to see the students volunteer their time to make sure the event was successful.

“Our kids are wonderful. They will wake up early on a Saturday morning and clean cages,” Lewis said. “They will do just about anything to help animals.”

One of those students is HHS Junior Jorge Reyes. He has helped with this event all three years and hopes to do more volunteer work through the organization.

“I love helping out at the ‘The Big Fix’ event and giving back to my community,” Jorge said.  “I’m also getting a first-hand experience and learning more about the career I’m pursuing, which is a surgical technician.”

Families seemed grateful and happy to attend the event, and they shared their personal stories of how they found their new fur babies.

Community member Margaret Prado found a pregnant pit bull wandering in her yard a few months ago. After realizing that the dog was a stray, she took her in without hesitation.

After some love and care, the pit bull mom, now named Platinum, had a total of eight puppies, six girls and two boys, all adorable and healthy. She took Platinum and the puppies to “The Big Fix” event to get them fixed and vaccinated and hopes to find them good homes.

“This event cuts down the number of strays running the street dramatically, and it helps prevents litters like this one,” exclaimed Prado. “It also really helps me to help the animals and give them a better life.”
