Harlandale ISD STEM and GT Coordinator Anthony Khosravi participated in a STEM Panel held at the McNay Art Museum on Jan. 23.

Moderated by Rosemary Hickman, the Semmes Foundation Education Manager for the McNay, the panel featured Khosravi along with a film production teacher.

Khosravi spoke to the museum’s docents, which are the volunteers that conduct the educational tours for the museum, about the importance of a STEM curriculum and why it’s important to promote this type of education with students.

“I spoke about how art is full of science, technology, engineering and mathematical concepts that can be addressed with our students in the hopes that they learn more about the world around them,” Khosravi said. “I also spoke about project based learning, and how students now work together to identify problems, then use the engineering design process to create or build the solution to their problem.”

The panel was designed to help the docents provide a more STEM and STEAM-based tour for students visiting the museum. Their discussions with the tour groups could be guided by addressing problems and guiding the students through solutions and answers; and therefore, engaging in an inquiry-based style of touring.

“My hope in participating with the McNay, and in this panel, is to provide our students here at Harlandale ISD access to the wonderful resources and programs available at the McNay. You never know, we could have the next Georgia O’Keeffe sitting here in one of our elementary schools,” Khosravi concluded.
