Harlandale’s prolific goal-scorer signs with Hill College

Ingrid Garcia signs with Hill College

Harlandale High School senior Ingrid Garcia continues to score big toward a bright future.

Surrounded by friends, family, coaches and administrators, the talented soccer player signed her letter of intent with Hill College on Feb. 28. The Student Union erupted with cheers and applause as Ingrid proudly signed the document, officially continuing her athletic career.

“I feel very excited and it’s very special,” Ingrid said. “I want to thank my family for supporting me during my games and my decisions, my coaches for pushing me through the years, my teachers that believed in me and my great friends that have been by my side. I am so grateful, and I hope to make them proud.”

With a total of 185 career goals to date, Ingrid has set a new record as San Antonio’s all-time leading scorer in girls soccer history and shows no signs of slowing down. She still has five games left in her high school career.

For HHS Coach Anna Castro, mentoring and coaching Ingrid since she was in sixth grade has been a blessing.

“Ingrid is not only dedicated, disciplined and driven, but she is also a very unselfish player. She’s humble and she’s a team player,” Coach Castro said. “She’s put a lot of time on the side to be better, and when she’s better, her team is better. She led by example and always worked to get better, and that is something that is rare to see nowadays.”

Ingrid is a two-time Express-News Super Team selections and also holds the area’s mark for single-season goals with 68 in 2017.

“Success speaks for itself, and right now, we’re aiming for the big 200 [goals] to continue to represent Harlandale and the community,” Castro added. “We’re very proud of her. She is aiming for higher than just college, so be ready to see her hopefully in the next level after college, we’re very excited!”

Coach Sonia Marin, who has coached Ingrid this year, agrees.

“We know she is awesome on the field, but I also love her camaraderie on the field” Coach Marin said. “She was a little hurt at the beginning, but she overcame that and was amazing. She’s going to be great, I’m very proud of her.”

HHS Principal Alfred Anthony congratulated Ingrid and her family for all of her accomplishments during her four years at Harlandale HS.

“If you’ve had the opportunity to watch her play, it can be speechless. Every game is an opportunity to see something special,” Principal Anthony said. “Thank you Ingrid and congratulations, Hill College is going to be very fortunate to have you.”

Congratulations, Ingrid!
