Gilbert Elementary hosts fun-filled Color Run

Powerful pops of color filled the air during Gilbert Elementary School’s first-ever Color Run on March 7.

Second through fifth grade students happily ran through clouds of pink, blue, green and yellow-colored corn starch as younger students, teachers and family members cheered them on from the sidelines.

Gilbert Elementary Social Worker Jennifer Montes said the event is a great opportunity for the students to come together to have fun and exercise.

“We have a Marathon Kids Running Club through Mustangs on a Mission, and we wanted to have a fun running event for our runners and to try to draw more students into enjoying running,” she said.

The goal of the run is to motivate students to stay active outside of the classroom.

“We believe that being active is important for our students to have healthy minds and bodies,” Montes added. “The physical activity of running is easy to do and gets the kids outside and active.”

With music blasting in the background, students got in the spirit sporting colorful bows, customized T-shirts and cool sunglasses.

“My favorite part was when they threw the color in the air,” fourth-grade student Jazmine Villegas said.

As part of the Marathon Kids Program, students have running goals and are working towards mileage milestones.

“Every time the students run, they build confidence in themselves,” Montes said. “We hope to build a lifelong love of running in them!”
