HISD schools celebrate ‘Heroes for Health Day’

Harlandale ISD elementary schools joined other elementary schools across San Antonio to celebrate the fourth annual “Heroes for Health Day” on March 8.

Each school welcomed local “heroes” in the community, who talked about the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices.

Stonewall Flanders ES first-grade students heard from U.S. Air Force Col. Gary Salmans and learned about the importance of eating breakfast and not skipping meals. He recommended them to exercise for 60 minutes or more per day, drink water first (5-7 cups per day), consume two servings of fruit each day and consume three servings of vegetables each day.

Afterwards, the school’s coaches led the students in fun exercise drills.

“Today, we are promoting food, nutrition and exercise, and how they go hand in hand,” Stonewall Flanders Coach Eva Ramos said. “We also focused on what it means to be a hero, and who the heroes are on campus and in the community.”
