The Career and Technical Association of Texas (CTAT) has awarded the Harlandale ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program the “CTE Showcase of Excellence” award in Area 7 for representing the best community partnerships, innovation, transferability and student impact.

HISD District CTE Coordinator Tracy Anderson will proudly accept the award on behalf of the CTE Program, teachers, counselors and staff at the CTAT Conference in Fort Worth at the end of July.

For Anderson, this recognition is a great opportunity to showcase all the different CTE programs available to all students in the Harlandale ISD.

“Students have the opportunity to participate in internships, take field trips to various businesses and participate in CTE organizations such as SkillsUSA, Business Professionals of America, Fire Explorers, CyberPatriots, Health Occupations Student Association and the National Technical Honor Society,” Anderson said. “Other districts and business partners are taking notice of the opportunities available here.”

Students can earn industry certifications, and several CTE courses are offered as dual credit courses.  In addition, they may attend class at the Alamo Academies at SAC and SPC during their 11th and 12th grade years and earn college credits in one of the five academies, including Aerospace, Information, Technology and Security Academy, Advanced Technology and Manufacturing, Health Professions, and Heavy Equipment.

“It is important to help prepare students and set a foundation of knowledge that they can carry upon graduation and in the next phase of college and career readiness,” Anderson said. “Here, students can earn an endorsement and the opportunity to see what a career pathway is about and what careers are available to them.”

Harlandale ISD’s CTE Department serves over 80 percent of students in high school. Featured high school courses include: accounting, Film School of San Antonio, cosmetology, auto tech, broadcasting journalism and culinary arts.

Anderson thanks all the CTE teachers for making this program successful.

“One of the best comments that I have heard is ‘You can really feel the heart here in HISD.’  And, I believe that sets us apart. Our CTE teachers are passionate about their careers and teaching students to become successful in their chosen careers,” Anderson concluded.

Congratulations, CTE educators!
