Every year, grandchildren across the country honor their grandparents the Sunday following Labor Day. This year, National Grandparents Day is Sept. 9.

Ahead of the special day, several Harlandale ISD students showed love and appreciation to their grandparents on Friday, Sept. 7.

As part of the celebration, Gillette Elementary held a delicious breakfast for grandparents and the Gillette Spur Choir delivered an exciting performance.

Stonewall Flanders Elementary also invited grandparents over for special reading time with their grandchildren. As the students read, the grandparents listened attentively and enjoyed delicious sweet treats.

“Grandparents bring a lot of enrichment to children, and they value their grandchildren’s education,” Stonewall Flanders Elementary Social Worker Yadira Garcia said. “It’s always exciting to invite them and celebrate them, and I think it’s important to make that connection.”

Garcia also encourages grandparents, who are raising their grandchildren, to contact their school to join Harlandale ISD’s Grandparents Support Group. The group meets every third Wednesday of the month at College Café from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
