Harlandale ISD Superintendent Rey Madrigal and the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) held their first meeting of the school year at STEM Early College High School on Sept. 25.

The young leaders in grades 6-12 joined the committee for displaying qualities of excellence in education, leadership, citizenship and community service.

During the meeting, the students learned more about their leadership role and had one-on-one access to top administrators in the district.

Superintendent Madrigal reminded students that they represent their schools and classmates, and their purpose is to voice their ideas in an effort to improve their learning environment at Harlandale ISD.

“I want to hear you concerns and achievements because that is important for me to make things better,” he said. “My number one goal is to provide you all with a quality education.”

He also motivated them to follow their dreams and continue their education after graduation.

“You can do anything you set your mind to,” he added. “Take advantage of your education and start making a plan now. You can all achieve anything you want.”

The students learned about various district events taking place throughout the school year, including National Night Out and Cultural Arts Festival, and had the opportunity to ask administrators a variety of questions regarding their campuses.

HISD Chief of Police Michael Ramirez was also in attendance and shared the importance of providing a safe environment for all students. He encouraged them to report any safety concern by calling (210) 932-SAFE.

Superintendent Madrigal will meet with the students three more times during the school year. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 11.
