Gifted and Talented (GT) students in third and fourth grade recently visited the San Antonio Museum of Art.

All of the 13 Harlandale ISD elementary campuses visited the museum to learn how art supports science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Groups of students enjoyed guided tours and visited various parts of the museum.

Tour guides introduced students to a variety of paintings, sculptures and engineering works of art. Students learned about the time the art was created including the types of materials available during the era, the type of technology used, how math played a crucial role in how the pieces were formed, and why pieces of art from a particular culture had similar characteristics.

After the tour, students were invited to take part in a STEAM challenge. They were given a bag of materials and were asked to create a 3D sculpture without the use of any adhesives. Students were really excited to take their artwork home to show their parents. At the end of the day, students were also given a free pass to invite their family to the museum.
