Harlandale ISD Food Pantry helps more than 500 families

Dozens of cars lined up around McCollum High School to pick up a variety of food items during a successful community Food Pantry event on Aug. 16.

This is the second Food Pantry event organized by Harlandale ISD, in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank, In Style Dental, Crystal Vargas Marketing and Nonprofit Financial Services.  The first one was held at Harlandale High School a couple of months ago.

Nearly 600 families in the Harlandale district received more than 22,000 pounds of food, which included beans, bread, water, canned goods, fruits and vegetables.

The effort was supported by district and community advocates, leaders and board members.

“I used to live in the Harlandale district when I was very young, so I know there is a great need in the area,” Crystal Vargas, one of the organizers, said. “I’m fortunate enough to have the resources to help, and I’m happy that I get to put these two things together to do something good for the community of Harlandale ISD.”

McCollum HS football and volleyball players volunteered their time unloading and distributing all the items to the Harlandale community.

Marissa Vasquez, a community parent, was proud to see the high school students lending a hand and expressed appreciation for the fresh produce she will taking home to her family.

“It’s good to see the students involved because the more they get involved with the community, the better the community does,” Vasquez said. “Grocery prices are going up, and I think we need all the help we can get, so I’m glad they decided to do it again here at McCollum.”

In case you missed this opportunity, the district is planning for two more food pantry events in the near future.
