Leal Middle School welcomed students, teachers and parents for its annual Literacy Night on Dec. 11.

Celebrating a holiday movie theme, the night featured an array of hands-on activities inspired by the popular movies “Elf,” “The Grinch,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “The Polar Express.” Students made their way to the cafeteria, library and hallways to visit every station, where they had the opportunity to decorate cookies, make snow, create bookmarks, make ornaments, play movie bingo, as well as participate in Blackout Poetry and a Christmas tree cup challenge.

After visiting five stations, students were eligible for gift baskets and prizes valued at more than $200 sponsored by H-E-B, Chick-fil-A and Bill Miller Bar-B-Q.

The event was organized by the Leal Middle School ELA Department in an effort to cultivate a love of reading and writing in students.

“We want to highlight the importance of reading and writing because without that ability, you really can’t do anything in life,” Leal Middle School seventh-grade ELA Teacher Cynthia Ramos said. “We want to encourage students to read at home for at least 20 minutes a night because that will improve their literacy, their reading comprehension and just make them a better reader and writer for life.”

At the end of the night, families also received free books, donated by SA Reads and Half Price Books, and popcorn to encourage a family reading night at home.
