In an effort to promote literacy beyond the classroom, nonprofit organization Give More HUGS (GMH) has donated more than 500 brand-new books to students at Harlandale ISD’s Adams Elementary on Jan. 13.

Tiffany Baltierra, a student ambassador and a college student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has volunteered with GMH for more than two years to ensure children have access to books and supplies. Up to date, the partnership has provided more than 2,500 books for students who often times do not have access to books at home. The nonprofit’s goal is to empower students, teachers and schools to share a love for reading through their BookShare project.

“I have witnessed the importance of giving back through my efforts as a student ambassador,” Baltierra said. It’s truly an impactful approach to preparing leaders who go out into the community to help provide books and supplies to children, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to support Adams Elementary School.”

A unique part of the BookShare project is that students from third, fourth and fifth grades will sign each book with an inspirational message to encourage younger readers to grow their love for reading. The upper grade students will also read to the younger students in the classroom this week.

“Partnering and providing books to every child helps to continue fostering the importance of literacy and making connections at home and school,” Adams Elementary School Principal Vanessa Fox-Norton said. “We are excited about this learning experience for our students as they will have an opportunity to interact with each other, meeting social and emotional needs.”

The school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will also host a special event for the community on Jan. 16, where GMH and school staff will share the importance of literacy and encourage parents to read their children’s brand-new books with them.

“The mission of our PTA program is to inform parents on educational topics related to our school, foster partnerships between the parents and school staff, and more importantly, help parents get engaged in their child's education,” Adams Elementary School PTA President James Cuellar said. “Our goal this year is to encourage parents to make reading together a daily part of their lives as a family, and we believe that the family that reads together, learns together. We are blessed to have the opportunity to partner with GMH.”
