Columbia Heights gets air time

KSAT’s SA Live crew recently visited Columbia Heights Elementary to personally congratulate the campus for winning Go Public’s Cool Schools competition. The segment will air at 1 p.m. on Dec. 19.

The theme for the competition was libraries and Columbia Heights won the contest with more than 13,000 votes.

“All of our libraries and librarians in the district are fabulous, but what makes us stand out is really building relationships,” Columbia Heights Librarian Cecilia Perfecto said. “We try to get to know each kid by name, find out what they like, what’s of interest to them and we connect them with the right kind of literature that is going to help them be better readers and do better in school.”

According to Perfecto, the library is no longer a place to solely check out books

“It’s not even a quiet place anymore,” she said. “Our library is loud, there are kids studying together, kids doing research, kids creating art in maker spaces.”

Maker spaces are kid-driven activity centers set up throughout the library with books and materials to create.

“It could be origami, it could be engineering, you leave them the books and the materials and they are going to do it, whether it’s alone or with a group,” Perfecto explained.

Columbia Heights Principal Santos Flores expressed his appreciation for his school library.

“The library is vital to children’s education because it allows them freedom to access other worlds that they might not normally have,” Flores said.

Congratulations, Braves!
