Fitness Fiesta gets Harlandale community moving

Great energy and smiles filled the Harlandale Memorial Stadium during the third annual Fitness Fiesta on March 24.

More than 1,200 people woke up bright and early to participate in all the fun activities, which included a free Zumba class, a 5K Fun Run/Walk and games for all ages.

The event was hosted by the HISD P.E. Department, in collaboration with Century ACE/Family Engagement and Pep Grant, to promote health and fitness in the community.

“The event was great!” PEP Grant Facilitator Nicole Garza said. “It was really exciting to see people of all ages being active together, cheering each other on, laughing and enjoying exercising.”

The first 700 runners and walkers to complete the 5K received a colorful medal. Families, couples and children celebrated and congratulated each other at the finish line.

“There were many first time 5K runners and walkers, which is the kick start for them to live a healthier lifestyle,” Garza said. “It shows that Harlandale understands the importance of being physically active and how physical activity leads to healthier and smarter students, parents and staff.”

The event also featured a variety of vendors, including the YMCA, Tru-Fit, Team Beef, Run SA Youth, Texas A&M AgriLife and It’s Time TX, as well as exciting giveaways, ranging from free bikes to gym memberships.

Overall, Garza was happy to see the large turnout and hopes the event becomes a new tradition at Harlandale.

“I imagine this event one day being a district event like Cultural Arts and National Night Out. I look forward to seeing the event grow into something larger than I can imagine and showcase the importance of being an ‘active’ Harlandale ISD community,” Garza concluded.
