GT students shine at Engineering Fair

Harlandale ISD hosted the third annual GT Engineering Fair at Palo Alto College on Dec. 15. This year’s theme was ‘Recycle, Repurpose and Reuse.’

For the students, the fair was the culmination of weeks’ worth of work on their engineering projects. The idea was for them to find something that fit within the fair’s theme and to explore it through the engineering design process.

“They had to identify a real world problem, they had to ask a question about it, they had to explore what is already being done to solve this problem,” GT Specialist Charles Hernandez explained. “So it’s a multifaceted experience, but most importantly, it’s about the students growing and learning something and having the chance to do something that they wouldn’t have normally done.”

Judges from the district evaluated the projects on how well the participants used the engineering design process.

As another component of the fair, several organizations including Snapology, Technolochicas and Geekbus attended the event to give students a day full of engineering.

An awards ceremony was held at the Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center in the evening.
