Gamma Sigma inspires girls to become leaders

Harlandale ISD girls are learning the importance of leadership and sisterhood through the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas Gamma Sigma Girls program.

Dedicated to advocacy, college readiness and giving back to the community, the leadership development initiative combines the Girl Scout Leadership Experience with a sorority style setting targeting teen girls.

In true sorority fashion, Gamma Sigma Girls has a younger sister chapter, Gamma Sigma Pearls.

Students from Harlandale Middle School, Leal Middle School, Kingsborough Middle School, Terrell Wells Middle School, Harlandale High School and McCollum High School showed their commitment to Gamma Sigma Girls and Gamma Sigma Pearls at the annual Investiture Ceremony on Nov. 14.

As part of the ceremony, the girls recited the Girl Scouts promise, lit candles and were pinned to become part of one of the oldest female empowering organizations.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Samantha Gallegos attended the ceremony and congratulated the young girls with some words of encouragement.

“I want you to know that the young, beautiful, bold, strong ladies sitting next to you are the future leaders, and together, you can be unstoppable,” Gallegos said. “Always remember, moments in your life can change you for the better or break you. Choices can give you opportunities, and decisions will lead you in directions that make you who you are today. Congratulations, we are so proud of your decision to be a part of the Girl Scout family.”

McCollum HS senior Liliana Elizondo, who joined Gamma Sigma last year, welcomed the girls and shared how being a part of the organization has been a valuable learning experience.

“I learned important values and morals as a young woman, and how to share them with other young women. Being a part of such a genuine, good-spirited group in high school helps more than you think,” she said. “I encourage you to throw yourself into the joy of Gamma Sigma. Not only will you have a significant amount of fun, but you will see just how women can be so powerful when they stand together.”

Now officially a part of the organization, the girls will focus on advocating for issues that they are passionate about by creating sustainable community service projects. They are all looking forward to encountering new, exciting opportunities and gaining long-lasting friendships.
