Gilbert ES prepares students for college

Gilbert Elementary students donned their college t-shirts and packed the cafeteria on Sept.23 for the school’s first College Bound Pep Rally of the school year.

Excitement was in the air as students and staff welcomed members of the Our Lady of the Lake Men’s Basketball Team and members of the University of the Incarnate Word Football Team. Athletes from both universities shared stories about growing up and how college is possible for anyone. The collegiate athletes also encouraged the Gilbert students to stay focused in school and to follow their dreams.

“Students get excited to see football and basketball players and their coaches taking time to come to our school,” Gilbert counselor Jennifer Montes said. “They enjoy interacting with the college students and to our students, these college kids are like rock stars.”

Gilbert has a flourishing College Bound Program that was created in 2008 and according to Montes the program has taken a major step forward this year.

“Universities from across the country have adopted each classroom including institutions of higher learning from as far away as Boston, Massachusetts and as close as right here in San Antonio,” Montes explained. “This school year, each classroom has been sent a class set of college shirts from their respective university that the students can wear on the last Friday of every month.”

Local colleges that have adopted Gilbert Elementary classrooms are UT Health Science Center, UTSA and Trinity University.

“At Gilbert, we want out students to know that college is a possibility for all of them,” Montes said.
