Golf tournament raises thousands of dollars for HEF scholarships

Local organizations took part in the 8th Annual Harlandale Education Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Republic Golf Course on Sept. 29 to brighten the future of our students.

More than 70 participants spent the morning playing 18 holes and raised nearly $20,000 for HEF scholarships that will help students further their education. Every Harlandale ISD student who goes on to college, university or technical/trade school is eligible for a HEF scholarship.

“We’re excited because every year we see our graduates taking advantage of the scholarships we offer,” HISD Superintendent Rey Madrigal said. “We want to thank all the sponsors because this wouldn’t be a success without your contributions and donations that you made to the Harlandale Education Foundation.”

The day of golf kicked-off with an energetic breakfast at 7 a.m. After several hours of friendly golf competition, the players enjoyed a barbecue lunch that featured hot dogs, burgers, beans, chips and cookies. During lunch, raffle items were given out and winners were announced.

All participants were gifted goodie bags and a HEF polo. Extra shirts are on sale for $15 in the Communications Office.

Money for the foundation will also be raised through the HEF Employee Fund Drive in February.

Since 1999, HEF has raised more than $1.6 million and awarded scholarships to more than 2,000 students.
