HISD honors board members

January is School Board Recognition Month and Harlandale ISD joins districts across Texas in celebrating the hard work and dedication of these locally elected advocates for public education.

This year’s theme is “All-Star Team” and Harlandale ISD trustees are definitely deserving of that title.

Messages of appreciation are posted on marquees throughout the district, elementary school students crafted creative “thank you” cards and a special dinner was held in honor of HISD Board of Trustees Carlos Quezada (President), Ricardo Moreno (Vice President), Christine Carrillo (Secretary) and members David Abundis, Erma Casarez, and Juan Mancha.

Surrounded by district administrators and campus principals, Superintendent Rey Madrigal thanked the Board of Trustees for giving their time and energy to ensure the success of Harlandale ISD.

“On behalf of the Harlandale ISD we are thankful for the leadership that is provided by our Board of Trustees,” Madrigal said. “Our board members serve as a guide to provide our students an excellent education while they also serve as a voice for the community.”

A few of their accomplishments in the past year include:

  • Approving Harlandale ISD to host the 21st Century Grant, which gives students the opportunity to explore areas in STEM, yoga, dance and robotics
  • Approving the refinancing of $9.6 million in bonds resulting in gross saving to the District
  • Approving the addition of the TEKS Resource Systems to support the rigorous curriculum Harlandale ISD strives to offer
  • Approving an insurance contribution increase and a 1.5 percent raise for all Harlandale ISD employees
  • Successfully passing Bond 2015 and opening several new facilities across the district

As a token of appreciation, HISD presented the Board of Trustees with a gift basket and a championship ring for the “All-Star” work they do day-in and day-out.
